From The Editor

The Utah State Trooper Magazine (Spring 2006 Edition)

Meet our Editor, "J.J." Jones, Senior Utah State Trooper, UHP HQ 1st SGT, and Editor of The Utah State Trooper Magazine. That's just three of the many hats he wears.

J.J.Jones, Editor, The Utah State Trooper Magazine

J.J. has been on the force now for about 33 years or so. J.J. started out in "The Field", or as it's also known "pounding the marble top". He was pivotal in establishing the UHP capability to detect and recover stolen vehicles, networking with other state and federal agencies from all over the U.S. and the world. Most of us consider J.J. to be a real "Type-A" personality: He never sits still. If you get him to a cup of coffee, don't make the mistake of ordering a refill unless you want to drink it alone. J.J. will be out the door and headed to his next project.
Uhhh, O.K., ...Later, J.J.!

Welcome to the Utah State Trooper magazine.

Let me first thank the many Utah businesses who so faithfully support our association by placing ads in this publication. Without them we could not serve our membership, support the Honoring Heroes Foundation, provide annual scholarships, donations to various national charities, or support the UHP Citizens' Academy at the level we now enjoy.

We are in very uncertain times. Maybe the economy is getting better, maybe it is not. The nation is on a war footing into th forseeable future and we need positive support from all citizens. You can bet there are open discussions on these issues in every forum one can imagine. I meet a lot of retired and active law enforcement personnel in the course of my day, and we are usually outspoken and will share our point of view with anyone willing to listen. Since most of us hold specific views, it is not unusual to see us nose-to-nose on some point. On one point we all agree; we are Americans and united we stand, divided we fall. in these discussions.

To the everyday citizen who shares the moment, this may seem a bit too much. But soon into the battle of words one finds that most cops are sincere and knowledgeable and, often with laughter, are soon onto the next topic up for discussion. The one thing I can be sure of is that the Founding Fathers of our nation would be very proud that citizens are still exercising free speech.

It is our job as cops in America to practice common sense by doing the right thing for the right reason. We are there 24/7 for the citizens because it is the right thing to do. People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care. Our freedoms are too dear to lose, so keep doing your part in protecting them.

It is our job as cops in America to practice common sense by doing the right thing for the right reason. We are there 24/7 for the citizens because it is the right thing to do.

Be Safe,
John Jones
