WELCOME TO The Salt Lake County Equestrian Park and Event Center and Salt Lake County Fairgrounds

BY SUSAN HAYWARD, DIRECTOR, EQUESTRIAN PARK AND EVENT CENTER

The Equestrian Park is owned by Salt Lake County and managed by SMG, a private management company that manages South Towne, the Salt Palace Convention Center locally and hundreds of venues worldwide. SMG took over management in January, 2014.

Located in the heart of South Jordan the equestrian Park provides a variety of events and activities for
people of all ages and interests. The park’s main focus is equestrian events, it also provides a large variety of nonequestrian events as well. The park is 120 acres with an indoor arena, covered arena, rodeo/concert arena, three additional arenas and a 12-acre section of lawn called the polo field. There are 306 permanent show stalls in addition to 287 boarding stalls.

If you like horses check out our calendar online (www.saltlake-equestrian.com) and come join us. The Park hosts such events as the Horse Expo, Utah Paint Horse Association Zone 2 Show, Quarter Horse races, Los Reyes del Carril & Los Tigres Promotions horse races, Hunter Jumper shows, Arabian shows, 4H events and horse shows, Utah Barrel Racing Association and rodeos, just to name a few. Horse clubs ride in our arenas every evening during the week from April thru October. One thing for sure – you can always find horses on the property!

Now that we’ve talked about the horses that are our guests for shows, let’s discuss the 287 horses that live here full time. Boarders rent stalls at our facility year round. It is a self-care park so they are required to clean, feed, water and care for their own horse. They also have the opportunity to ride in any of the arenas that are open during non-event times and anywhere on the grounds. For those not boarding at the park we have a day or annual pass that can be purchased that allows the pass holder to use all the same amenities as a boarder. It’s a beautiful park!

Aside from equestrian events, we are proud to host other great events at our venue such as the Jordan Circus, BMX Racing, 5K runs of every type, LaCrosse Tournaments, Wasatch Gem Show, Intermountain and Utah Kennel Club Dog Show and many others. There’s a wide variety of events to check out.

The Park has a three-quarter mile AQHA approved race track. We host a variety of horse races but are primarily a training track for race horses. They are beautiful to watch – spirited and graceful. When the race season starts, many of them leave to participate in the race circuit throughout the summer, but return in the fall and train at the Park.

One of the perks that came with managing the Equestrian Park was also managing the Salt Lake County Fair. This year our fair runs August 12-15 (mark that in your calendars!) and promises to be one of the best we’ve had in years. Our theme is “Fun For The Whole Herd!” and provides something for every age and interest.

Our entertainment lineup is awesome. Opening Day is Veterans Day at the Park. Vets get free admission until 4pm and half price after that. Reserved seating for the show will be available for our veterans wanting to attend. Joe Nichols and David Fanning headline the first night of the fair. It’s a free concert, but does require a ticket which will be available at our office and through our sponsors. Check the Fair web site for locations.

Friday brings in a new event to the fair – maybe to any fair – Knights of Mayhem, full armored knights in combat! These are world champions and it’s the real deal. This will sell out fast.

Some of our other headliners are Monster Trucks and 5050bmx Stunt Team, Ryan Chris and the Rough Cuts, Margie Chadburn, the Hypno Hick, the FUNdeMENTALS, Irish dancers, and so many more.

If you’ve got talent, we have a contest for you! Each year the fair hosts the Salt Lake County’s Got Talent competition. This year the competition is open to any type of talent that is kid and family friendly.

Grounds acts are phenomenal this year and will include an 8’ tall, 16’long strolling dinosaur- sure to wow crowds of all ages! Look for the Phantom Flyers Dunk Team, the horse pull and the Kids Fishing Pond. Check out the 4H animals and be amazed at what these kids are learning about responsibility and livestock. Get brave and try the Thrillbillies Stunt Ramp and Zip Line. Plus – we have fun contests for everyone to participate in: twins, triplets, mustache and beard, Mayor Ben McAdams Pie Contest, Dutch Oven Competition, Wilton Cake Decorating. It’s safe to say there’s tons for everyone!

The fair has a new carnival this year, Brown’s Amusements. This is a large carnival with some fabulous rides for the young and the young at heart. We have everything from fabulous spectacular rides, such as Zero Gravity and Pharaoh’s Fury, to a great line up of kids’ rides including Indy Race Car, Dizzy Dragons, and Caterpillar Bulldozers! So bring your family, kids, grandkids, friends and neighbors and join us for a great time. It’s $10 a carload, NO admission charge. Load up the car because this is a fabulous deal.

Here a little tip: plan ahead to attend the fair and buy pre-sale tickets for the carnival. You’ll really save some money!

Most importantly, participate in the fair if you can. Enter your woodwork, quilting, gardening or other hobby works that you enjoy in Competitive Exhibits. It is unbelievable to see the beautiful items that fairgoers bring in for judging. We want people to take the time to enter their items. After all, who doesn’t love a fair ribbon? If you love to make pies, bring yours in for the Mayors Pie Contest. Cake decorator? We’ve got one for you too.

We love our volunteers and depend on them to help us produce the best fair ever. If you would like to volunteer at the fair, give Chelsea a call (385.468.1600). Volunteers are used as ushers in the grandstand, at the information booth, assisting with competitive exhibits and many other fun and enjoyable jobs.

Food Alley will be amazing this year. We have a huge variety of food for you to try so come in everyday, enjoy all the activities, check out the beautiful competitive exhibits and have dinner with us.

Come visit us anytime at the park. It’s a beautiful place for a walk or to watch a show. We have something going on almost every day.
